The United States government announced an investment of 21 million dollars to renew a sterile flies production in Metapa, Chiapas, in order to combat the boreride worm of the cattle.
He said that the restrictions on the imports of live animals in Mexico are still valid and that, as previously announced, it will continue to evaluate the suspension every 30 days.
“Our alliance with Mexico is crucial for the success of this effort. We continue to work closely with Mexico to move away the bare -world of the New World of the United States and Mexico,” the Secretary of Agriculture, Brooke L. Rollins, said in a statement.
“The investment that announced today is one of the many initiatives that my team makes tirelessly to protect our animals, our agricultural economy and the safety of the food supply of our country,” he added.

Once in operation, the plant will produce between 60 and 100 million additional sterile flies weekly to boost the population to southern Mexico, according to the US Ministry of Agriculture (USDA).
Given the geographical extension of the GBN, this additional production capacity will be crucial for our response.
The agency added that this afternoon Rollins communicated with his Mexican counterpart Julio Berdegué to analyze the current threat of the boreride worm and the measures that both countries are taking to contain it south of the US border.
“The USDA works daily with Mexico to ensure that the resources, tactics and tools necessary to effectively eradicate the cheap worm are maintained,” he said.
He added that all the flies currently used in the facilities of the Panama-United States Commission for the eradication and prevention of the Barrenador worm, in Panama, and that the investment announced for Metapa would allow the US Government to double the use of the technique of sterile insects to combat the boreride worm.

He informed that the Animal and Vegetable Health Inspection Service (ABHIS) of the USDA and its Mexican counterparts continue to make calls and meetings about the boreride worm.
“They are achieving important advances in improving surveillance in Mexico, the administrative or regulatory obstacles solution that could hinder an effective response and the guarantee that adequate controls are implemented for the movement of animals in order to prevent greater propagation,” he said.
He added that the APHIS will send a technical team to Mexico in the coming weeks to evaluate the situation.
In this regard, the Ministry of Agriculture of Mexico (Sader) confirmed in a statement that a mission of the USDA will come to the country “in the next few days to review the measures agreed by both governments and from their verification the suspension of livestock exports will be lifted.”
The Government of Mexico said that Secretary Rollins had informed its Mexican counterpart the approval of American assistance to install a new plant for the production of sterile flies in Chiapas, but did not mention the investment.
The Sader said that the plant is a proposal raised by Mexico since the beginning of the emergency in November 2024.
He added that a regionalization strategy will begin to keep the northern part of the country, through the reinforcement of mobilization, inspection, inspection and livestock control measures.
According to the Sader, Berdegué informed his counterpart that the number of new weekly cases of a borer worm reached its maximum point in mid -April and, since then, has decreased by 51.8%, “which demonstrates the effectiveness of the measures that are still applied.”
“The Government of Mexico is confident that, due to the results on the field and the technical agreements achieved, the export of livestock will resume in a short time,” he confided.
The USDA informs that it will be to renew a sterile flies plant and that the suspension of Mexican cattle is still in force; A technical team will come to review advances.
