The US attorney general, Pamela Bondi, said Tuesday that she ordered federal prosecutors to request the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the alleged murderer of the executive director of Unitedhealthcare, Brian Thompson.
“After a careful consideration, I have ordered federal prosecutors to request the death penalty in this case, while we implement the Trump President Trump to stop violent crimes and make the United States be safe again,” says Bondi in the statement.
The attorney general indicates that it is a “premeditated murder and cold blood” by Brian Thompson, who qualifies as an innocent man and father of two young children, “at the hands of Luigi Mangione.”
Bondi says that the murder was “an act of political violence” and that, according to allegations, Mangione “harassed and murdered the United Executive Brian Thompson, on December 4, 2024”.
“Mangione actions involved considerable planning and premeditation, and since the murder took place in public, with passers -by close, there could be a serious risk of death for other people,” he concludes.

Luigi Mangione not only faces death penalty, but two more judicial process
In the state of New York, no execution has been carried out since Eddie Mays in 1963, although there were prisoners in the death corridor until 2007, according to the Death Penalty Information Center in the US.
These federal murder positions are those that could lead to the defendant the death penalty, although it also faces two other judicial processes, one at the state level in New York for a possible act of terrorism and another in Pennsylvania.
The Prosecutor’s Office declared that both cases will be processed in parallel. Although state charges are expected to be judged first, it is not clear if Bondi’s statements will affect the order of judicial processes.
Mangione declared, for the moment, not guilty of state charges and is currently being held at the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center (New York).
The alleged killer, 26, is accused of killing Thompson on December 4 in the heart of Manhattan, after which he starred in a escape of film dyes and, five days later, he was arrested by the police in a McDonald’s of Altoona (Pennsylvania).
The case of Mangione Hagenerized great interest in the United States, where many consider the young man a hero who faced the private insurers business, to the point where an initiative that brings together funds to pay his defense has already raised more than $ 700,000.
