A four -year -old Mexican, who receives vital treatment in the United States and who together with his family were exposed to be expelled from the country, can remain in US territory, after receiving humanitarian protection from the government of President Donald Trump.
Sofia, as the little girl has been identified by the lawyers of the public organization Counsel, suffers from the short intestine syndrome, a potentially deadly condition that prevents her body from absorbing enough nutrients, which could not be treated successfully in Mexico.
The girl and her parents were able to enter the US in July 2023, thanks to an emergency humanitarian entry permit for her to receive medical treatment at the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital, one of the few in the country that deals with this condition in young children.

However, last April the Department of National Security (DHS) informed his parents that the permit had been revoked and had to leave the territory.
Sofia’s mother, Deysi Vargas, was also notified that her work permit was canceled, which means that the family has no means to pay medical accounts and continuous displacement from Bakersfield (California), where they reside, to Los Angeles.
Public Counsel initiated a campaign to ask the Trump administration to extend the girl’s stay permission, which would allow her to continue the treatment.
Rebecca Brown, lawyer from Public Counsel, confirmed to the newspaper Los Angeles Times that the immigration authorities have granted the humanitarian permit.
“However, many families still face damage due to the broad policy of eliminating humanitarian probation. We ask the Government to guarantee that no one is in danger,” added the lawyer.
A group of about 40 Democratic legislators, headed by the senators by California Alex Padilla and Adam Shiff, had urged the Trump government to give the girl a chance.

The chances of Sofia receiving the attention she needs in Mexico are practically “impossible,” said lawyers.
The doctors of the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital have declared that Sofia would die in a matter of days without their current treatment.
