The US Automobile Sector Union, United Auto Workers (UAW), applauded on Wednesday the Donald Trump administration decision to impose 25% tariffs on the import of cars and said it is the end of the “free trade disaster.”
The president of the union, Shawn Fain, declared in a statement his satisfaction with the measure, announced on Wednesday by Trump and said that “the disaster of free trade that has devastated the communities of the working class for decades has ended.”
“Finishing the downward race in the automobile industry begins to fix our broken commercial agreements, and the Trump administration has made history with the actions announced today,” Fain added.

The trade unionist, who during the last presidential campaign in the US aligned the powerful union with Trump’s rival, Joe Biden, justified his support for the Republican President because the goal is positive for workers.
“From the union we have made it clear: we will collaborate with any politician, regardless of their party, which is willing to reverse decades of setback for the working class in the most profitable times in the history of our country,” he explained.
“These tariffs are a great step in the right direction for car workers and workers’ communities throughout the United States,” he added.
UAW said that tariffs will allow to recover “thousands” from jobs in the country and that in the last decade national production has been reduced by 2 million units at the same time that millions of cars produced abroad are sold in the EU.

UAW ended up requesting the “immediate” renegotiation of the TMEC “that has only perpetuate the harmful effects of NAFTA (the original free trade agreement between Mexico, EU and Canada) by increasing the commercial deficit with Mexico and allowing companies to transfer EU jobs”.
