The United States recalled Monday before the Security Council that it is “the global leader” in the training and financing of the United Nations Peace Operations and has contributed 15,000 million dollars for its financing since 2016, before claiming a clearer accountability to continue its commitment.

The Interim Representative of the United States, Dorothy Shea, waiting for the Senate to approve the name of the new ambassador designated by Donald Trump, Elise Stefanik, did not bring any announcement to the Board of any announcement of withdrawal of his country or of dentanciation of any of the peace missions in the world, as feared, within the logic of the Trump administration to reduce its commitments to reduce its commitments.

However, Shea claimed that there is an “accountability for performance” in these peace missions, which can thus “improve their efficiency”, given the nature of current conflicts, which are eternalized over time.

Thus, he claimed that “the appropriate consequences” be applied to disciplinary problems, inaction or low performance, which should be translated into the immediate repatriation of those responsible or in the retention of their wages.

Also in this sense, Shea suggested that a better planning of them be applied to the peace missions to prioritize resources according to clear referents.

There are currently eleven peace missions in the world, the vast majority in Africa and the Middle East. They suppose the deployment of 52,321 blue helmets attended by just over 6,000 military police and 7,504 people in civil tasks.
