Howard Lutnick, candidate for the Secretary of Commerce of the president of the United States, said that Canada and Mexico can avoid the threat of Donald Trump to impose 25% tariffs on US imports if they act quickly to prevent the entry of fentanil and illegal immigrants.
Lutnick said at a confirmation hearing in the Senate that tariff April.
He argued that he advised Trump to apply generalized country tariffs by country to restore “reciprocity” to commercial relations and said he would erect stronger brakes in China’s access to United States technology, including advanced semiconductors of artificial intelligence.

Lutnick said Trump’s deadline to impose 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico was destined to press the two countries to stop the fentanyl flow.
The measures are independent of the broad review of American tariffs, trade agreements and other commercial policies ordered by Trump when he assumed the position last week.
“So it is another tariff to move to the action of Mexico and the action to Canada,” Lutnick said about the threat of 25%tariffs. “And as far as I know, they are acting quickly, and if they execute it, there will be no tariff.”
Lutnick repeatedly requested to restore “reciprocity” in commerce with other countries, in line with Trump’s promise to erect a universal tariff of 10% over all imports. He also said he wanted to improve United States access to Canada’s dairy market, largely closed.
“My way of thinking, and I discussed this with the president, it is a country by country, macro,” Lutnick said at the audience when his preference was asked about how Trump should impose tariffs.
Lee: Tariffs would cause recession in the US and deceleration in Mexico
“We are horribly treated by the global commercial environment. All have higher tariffs, non -tariff commercial barriers and subsidies, ”said Lutnick. “They treat us badly. We need to treat us better. We need to be treated with respect, and we can use tariffs to create reciprocity, justice and respect. ”
