White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt said that on February 1 it is still the scheduled date for the entry of 25% tariffs that President Donald Trump announced for Mexico and Canada.

In his first press conference since Trump’s investiture, on January 20, Leavitt said that “the date of February 1 is maintained” for tariffs applicable to these two countries, as well as China.

“The president expects all nations to cooperate in the repatriation of his citizens, and has made specific statements to Canada and Mexico regarding what he expects in terms of border security,” Leavitt said, in response to questions about what those could do those countries to avoid tariffs.

During the conference, Leavitt acknowledged that they have seen historical levels of cooperation with Mexico “on this issue, and stressed that any modification to Trump’s decision to impose tariffs will be duly communicated.

On January 20, after assuming the position, Trump signed a series of decrees in the Oval office and confirmed his intention to apply tariffs to Mexico and Canada, arguing that these countries are allowing the entry of large amounts of people and fentanil .

“We are considering 25% for Mexico and Canada because they are allowing many people to enter and also fentanyl. I think we will do it on February 1, ”he said at the time. In addition, he described Canada as a “great abuse.”
