San Diego, (EFE) .- The United States Department of Justice presented in a San Diego court charges for drug trafficking directed against two leaders of the Sinaloa cartel, which is the first time that there are accusations of terrorism linked to drug trafficking in the country.

The defendants are Pedro Inzunza Noriega, 62, and his son Pedro Inzunza Coronel, 33, pointed out of having trafficked drugs to the United States for the cartel.

The US prosecutor, Pam Bondi, said in a statement that dismantling the Sinaloa cartel demands an innovative and forceful legal response. “They ended their days of brutizing the American people without consequences; we will seek life imprisonment for these terrorists.”

Federal prosecutor Adam Gordon highlighted the historic accusation in a press conference.

“Today is the first time there are charges against leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel for Narcoterrorism and Materials for Narcoterrorism, in connection with trafficking of massive amounts of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamines and heroin.”

The accusation considers “materials to commit narcoterrorism” the narcotics that the Sinaloa traffic cartel towards the United States.

The charges are based on the executive order of President Donald Trump, who in February appointed drug cartels of Mexico, including that of Sinaloa, as foreign terrorist organizations.

Gordon said that to combat cartels as terrorist organizations, since the day he was appointed prosecutor for the Southern California district, on April 11, he formed a narcoterrorism unit that collaborated for the investigation and formulation of the positions presented today.

The official said that from now on drug trafficking leaders will face “a hunt” of both their friends and their enemies.

“We are going to chase them until in the end they face their destination in a federal court in southern California,” said the official.

The two defendants, Pedro Inzunza Noriega, known as Sagittarius, and Pedro Inzunza Coronel, nicknamed the pigeon, began to traffic cocaine for decades that brought from Colombia to the United States, according to judicial documents.

The accusation says that more recently both were involved in fentanyl traffic and synthetic drugs.

On December 3, 2024, the Mexican Police raided locations in Sinaloa that are controlled and administered by the father and the son, where 1,500 kilos of fentanyl were seized, the largest seizure of synthetic drugs in the world.

In addition to the Inzunza, Mexicans David Alejandro Heredia Velázquez, 50, were accused in the case; Daniel Eduardo Bojorquez, 47; Javier Alonso Vázquez Sánchez, 31; The Guatemalan Oscar René González Menéndez, 45, and the Costa Rican Elías Alberto Quirós Benavides, 53.

If they are convicted, they could face a maximum perpetual chain penalty, more economic fines.
