The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, announced on Wednesday a visa restriction policy aimed at officials of foreign governments and other persons considered responsible for facilitating illegal immigration in the country.

“Countries along the migratory routes must do their part to prevent and deter traffic of foreigners who seek to enter the United States illegally,” said the Secretary of State in a statement to announce the new policy.

The policy will focus on immigration officials, customs, airports and port authorities, as well as other people who “knowingly facilitate the transit of foreigners with the intention of illegally immigrating to the United States through the southwest border of the country,” Rubio said in a statement.

“These measures will remain until these officials assume the responsibility of ensuring that policies are established and the current laws are applied to prevent the transit of these people,” he said.

Rubio’s decision expands a 2024 policy, designed by the then administration of Joe Biden, which restricts the visas to those responsible for airlines and other private transport companies that facilitate the movement of undocumented migrants seeking to reach the United States.
