The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has suspended the financing of research and programs of the University of Maine, the institution reported Tuesday, after President Donald Trump faced Governor Janet Mills for the state’s refusal to ban trans athletes in women’s sports.

In an email received by the University of Maine, the Financial Director of the USDA ordered the pause of all payments while the department “evaluates whether you must take monitoring measures” related to possible violations of civil rights at school.

The school said in a press release that he had received 30 million dollars in funds from the USDA in fiscal year 2024.

The USDA did not immediately respond to a request for comments late on Tuesday.

Trump, Republican, and Mills, Democrat, discussed on February 21 about the decree of the president who seeks to prohibit Trans athletes in adult and youth women’s sports.

“You better do it because you are not going to receive federal financing,” Trump warned of Mills, while he was addressed to the governors during a meeting in the dining room of the White House.

Mills replied: “We are going to comply with the law, Lord. We will see each other in court. ” Trump replied: “Enjoy his life after governor, because I don’t think he is an elected authority.”

A day after the confrontation, the USDA announced an investigation into whether the University of Maine was violating the federal law that prohibits sexual discrimination.
