Marvel’s new Guardians of the Galaxy are a carefully selected team of legends. Regardless of who’s wearing the badge, the Guardians of the Galaxy are known as galactic misfits protecting many worlds that don’t even know of their existence. The Guardians’ ragtag essence is the heartbeat of the team across every different iteration.
The Guardians of the Galaxy have undergone several radical reinventions that kept the mantle fresh. From the original 1969 group of freedom fighters from the 31st century to the modern staples from the Annihilation: Conquest era to a rotating roster of notable guests like Iron Man, The Thing, and Kitty Pryde, each version of the Guardians brings a different flavor of heroism to the team.
Now, 2026’s Imperial Guardians sees the debut of one of the most efficient Guardians of the Galaxy line-ups to date, only active for a limited time.
Marvel’s Imperial Guardians Of The Galaxy Explained
The Galactic Union’s Crisis Led To Maximus’ Creation Of A Brand-New Team Of Semi-Official Guardians Of The Galaxy
The formation of the Imperial Guardians is the direct result of the Kree-Skrull Alliance’s collapse during the opening act of Jonathan Hickman’s Imperial. As the integrity of the Shi’ar and Skrull empires dissolved into the Imperial War, a power vacuum threatened to swallow the Marvel Cosmos. In between destabilizing the Galactic Union and placing the blame on the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda, Maximus the Mad recruited five cosmic heroes to act as a black ops team.
Despite ignoring the extent of his brother’s evil plans, Black Bolt took a neutral position to the conflict in Imperial, knowing it could benefit the Inhumans.
Maximus specifically chose deniable assets like Christopher Powell and Cosmic Ghost Rider because they exist outside traditional military chains of command. This allows the Galactic Union to perform precise strikes on sovereign star systems without declaring formal war. Aided by full-fledged heroes, Maximus bought himself a veneer of legitimacy and masked the fact that the Imperial Guardians are essentially a high-budget cleanup crew for a disaster he helped facilitate.
Who Are Marvel’s New Guardians Of The Galaxy Members & What Are Their Powers?
Two Former Guardians And One Avenger Are Part Of The Imperial Guardians
As the powerhouse of the team, Carol Danvers brings the experience of a seasoned Avenger to the cosmic frontlines. As a Human-Kree hybrid caught in the blast of a Psyche-Magnitron, Carol possesses the ability to absorb and project massive amounts of stellar energy. In this new role, Captain Marvel serves as the team’s tactical anchor, utilizing her Binary power to defend the fragile peace of the Galactic Union while struggling with the compromises demanded by Maximus.
The Avengers’ latest line-up has officially come to an end in The Avengers #36, and a new version of the team is set to debut soon.
Although Captain Marvel comes directly from leading the Avengers’ fight against Kang and Myrddin in Jed MacKay’s Avengers run, the Imperial Guardians are led by Gamora. The Deadliest Woman in the Galaxy is the only original Guardian in this iteration, and her role has shifted into that of a disciplined field leader. A Zen-Whoberi survivor biologically augmented by Thanos, Gamora possesses superhuman strength, agility, and mastery of weapons and martial arts, which are essential for keeping her volatile teammates in line during high-stakes missions.
Perhaps the most unpredictable member of the roster, Cosmic Ghost Rider hails from an alternate future where he became the Spirit of Vengeance and was later imbued with the Power Cosmic by Galactus. Cosmic Ghost Rider wields a terrifying combination of Hellfire and cosmic energy, capable of making the Devourer of Worlds bleed. On top of that, Cosmic Ghost Rider is now able to revive the people he has personally killed.

After a history of being the Totally Awesome Hulk, Amadeus has refined his gamma-powers into his Brawn form. In the Imperial era, Amadeus often utilizes specialized Hulkbuster tech to augment his physical limits, serving as the team’s lead scientist and heavy hitter, which makes him a fusion of the Avengers’ Iron Man and Hulk.
The man behind the visor in the Imperial Guardians is the veteran Christopher Powell, whose powers originate from a Shi’ar amulet that swaps his human body with a powerful suit of armor from the Null Space dimension that grants him flight, energy shields, and retractable talons. Chris’ service in the Galactic Union is currently haunted by a psychic glitch: he’s tormented by the Datasong, a stream of fragmented visions showing an apocalyptic future for the cosmos.
Where You Know Marvel’s New Imperial Guardians Of The Galaxy From
All Imperial Guardians Have A Long And Sturdy Superhero Career
The Guardians of the Galaxy star in their own comic in 2026’s Imperial Guardians #1, written by Dan Abnett, with art by Marcelo Ferreira and Jay Leisten. However, before their own title and their Imperial prelude, each of the Imperial Guardians had their own adventures, both solo and as part of a team. Carol has been at the forefront of global defense, leading the Avengers against Kang, Varnae, and Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, Gamora was last seen operating as a freelance enforcer in the Edge of Null, where she successfully dismantled a Chitinaut hive-mind.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Crowns Its New Leader with One Perfect Line
A new era just began for the Guardians of the Galaxy, as Star-Lord is replaced by a new leader who promises to become the team’s big gun.
Cosmic Ghost Rider has been on a chaotic revenge tour across the universe, which has included a bizarre team-up with a younger, rehabilitated Thanos. Elsewhere, prior to joining the Guardians, Christopher Powell served as the security chief at Project PEGASUS, where he was the first to detect the dimensional rift that allowed the Imperial War to begin. Amadeus has been acting as a scientific consultant for the Champions, where he recently stabilized a collapsing Gamma-Reactor in the heart of the Negative Zone.
Where Are The Other Guardians Of The Galaxy Now
Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, And Other Guardian Icons Are Busy Elsewhere
While the Imperial Guardians serve as the proactive arm of the new Galactic Union, the classic members of the Guardians of the Galaxy have found themselves scattered across a transformed Marvel Universe. The most significant shift belongs to Peter Quill, who finally embraced his royal lineage at the conclusion of Imperial #4. After the assassination of various galactic heads of state, including his father, Star-Lord stepped up to take the throne as the Emperor of Spartax.
Meanwhile, other fan favorites are navigating their own paths. Rocket Raccoon has worked as a lone mercenary, briefly crossing paths with Peter Parker during his recent cosmic trek, while Drax is currently serving as a reluctant peacekeeper on the fringes of the cosmos. Nebula, Mantis, and Groot are taking a break in the aftermath of Grootfall, where Groot transformed into an all-devouring planet. Kitty Pryde and the Thing are back in their original teams, and Flash Thompson is back on Earth dealing with a new generation of symbiotes.
