Tom Holland’s Peter Parker swings back into action with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and he’s got a host of new villains to fight, as well as one familiar face. So far in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man has fought Vulture, Shocker, Thanos, Mysterio, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman, the Lizard, and Doc Ock.
But Brand New Day is the start of a fresh era for Spider-Man, and that means a host of new foes. While the movie could bring the web-slinger up against Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Punisher (Jon Bernthal), the MCU characters won’t be traditional villains for the story. The same could be said of Sadie Sink’s mysterious character at the end.
As fun as Spider-Man fighting Hulk, Punisher, or other Marvel heroes may be, the MCU is also utilizing his incredible rogue’s gallery to give him some street-level antagonists. There could be many more at the end of the day, but these are the Spider-Man: Brand New Day villains confirmed to appear in some capacity.
Sadie Sink’s Mystery Character
The identity of Sadie Sink’s character is still not confirmed, even after Sony and Marvel dropped the first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer. While she could ultimately still be a Marvel hero like Jean Grey, that is not how she’s been positioned in the marketing.
Her character is seen imprisoned and seemingly is the one who has mind-control abilities. In one sequence, she’s shown jumping from the minds of three different hosts. That’s made her a target of not only the Department of Damage Control, but also of Spider-Man – at least for a portion of the narrative.
Scorpion
Brand New Day is finally paying off a villain tease nine years in the making by including Scorpion. Spider-Man: Homecoming introduced Mac Gargan (Michael Mando) as a criminal looking to buy some of Vulture’s Chitauri-infused tech. He was ultimately arrested and shown in prison asking Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes about Spider-Man’s identity.
Mando’s return was first realized when he was spotted on set during filming. The villain has also since been featured on early marketing materials for the film, which is how Scorpion’s Brand New Day costume was revealed. But he also got some time to shine in the official first trailer, where he tells Spider-Man to stay out of his way.
His quest for revenge against Peter Parker will continue in Brand New Day. The exact nature of Scorpion’s role in the movie is not confirmed, only that he’ll get out of prison somehow and finally get his rematch with Spider-Man. This time, he’ll have his Scorpion supervillain suit, too, allowing him to be stronger and unleash some damage on Peter with his giant, robotic stinger.
Tombstone
The MCU is finally giving one of Spider-Man’s biggest street-level villains his live-action debut, as Tombstone is entering the mix with Brand New Day. The giant albino crime boss is a recurring foe for Spidey in the comics. He was previously in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
That is relevant for Brand New Day, as Marvel and Sony elected to keep the same actor around between animation and live-action. Marvin “Krondon” Jones III is confirmed to be returning as Tombstone in Brand New Day. He is, obviously, a different version of the street villain, but the two variants are still loosely connected through the Marvel multiverse.
There’s no current information on Tombstone’s role in the movie, though. His presence does suggest how the new installment will showcase more of Peter’s battles with various New York criminals. With his increased strength and smarts, he’ll be a dangerous foe for Spider-Man.
Boomerang
Another Spider-Man villain getting his debut in Brand New Day is Boomerang, also known as Fred Myers. He has a long history of battling Spidey and other Marvel heroes, like Daredevil. The villain, who is incredibly skilled at throwing specialized boomerangs (as his name would suggest), is also prone to joining supervillain teams like the Sinister Syndicate and the Sinister Six, but he’s also worked with Peter at times.
Boomerang’s involvement in Brand New Day was officially confirmed through promo materials for the material that show the character with an incredibly comic-accurate suit. A glimpse of him fighting Spider-Man was seen in the first trailer.
There’s currently no known actor attached to the role, nor is it clear exactly how he factors into the plot. Boomerang could be a secondary villain with his own motives or someone working for Tombstone or Scorpion.
Tarantula
Brand New Day‘s villain list also includes Tarantula. The spider-themed supervillain mantle has been around for decades in the comics, and many different people have operated under the guise. It’s not clear exactly which version of the character Marvel has opted to bring into the picture for this Peter Parker story.
The reveal of Tarantula’s involvement in Brand New Day stems from the same artwork that showed Scorpion and Boomerang, alongside Spider-Man and Hulk. The male character is seen in a red and black suit, which is traditional for those using this mantle. But no actor has been revealed for this part so far. The Brand New Day trailer showed Tarantula fighting Spider-Man aboard a ship.
It’s most likely that Marvel is using the Anton Miguel Rodriguez or Luis Alvarez versions of the character, as they were the first and second people to don the title. Both were highly skilled fighters, so whichever version of Tarantula is in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, he will be a challenging opponent for the hero.
The Hand
It is also confirmed that Spider-Man will face off with The Hand in Brand New Day. The red-dressed ninjas are part of an ancient clan that has a major presence in New York. Peter will fight The Hand multiple times throughout the film, including in a prison.
This is the first time The Hand has appeared in a Marvel Studios production, but the ninjas were previously a major part of former Netflix shows, Daredevil and The Defenders. Characters like Elektra, Nobu, and Madame Gao were members of the clan. It’s currently unknown which characters from the comics will be utilized in this secret society for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
