International cooperation will be a key factor in compliance with the ambitious plan of Mexico to reduce 140 million tons of polluting gases around 2030, in the midst of an international hostile political context, growing environmental crises and a high economic dependence of the United States, experts said on Thursday in the framework of World Environment Day.

During a forum organized by the Climate Initiative of Mexico (ICM) and the European Union on World Environment Day, Francisco André, Ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Mexico, he pointed out that this day invites “looking to” look at all the full panorama “, at a time marked by” diverse crises “, such as the climatic, environmental, energy, food, social, even security.

“No country, however strong it has the capacity to generate this issue (climate change) what we need is to look through the multilateral system (…) is a reminder that we are still on time, but the truth is that there is no time to learn,” said André.

“World Environment Day reminds us of the urgent need to act to stop the deterioration of our common home. At the same time, it gives us the opportunity to promote collective actions and determined by a more fair, sustainable and inclusive world. From the European Union, we reaffirm our commitment to the global green transition and with the strengthening of cooperation with partners such as Mexico to face together these common challenges,” he said.

The event discussed possible strategies, alliances and influence mechanisms to strengthen an effective and responsible international climate governance, as well as analyze its specific implications for Latin America and, in particular for Mexico, at a key moment to define its position in the new environmental geopolitical context.

Specifically, experts called to reinforce cooperation with other regions such as Europe and Latin America to boost an agenda other than that of the United States, whose new president, Donald Trump, remarks his skepticism about the effects of climate change and is unchecked from international initiatives.

In her speech, Andrea Hurtado, Director of Policy for Climate Action of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), explained that the country is going through an “unprecedented opportunity”, so the commitment to reduce 35% of its emissions was imposed.

This, he added, would imply a structural transformation into key sectors such as transport, energy, agriculture and industry, which would impact high qualification jobs in the country.

In this process, Hurtado emphasized that international cooperation will be decisive, as he stressed that without the technical and financial support of partners such as the European Union, ICM, the German GIZ Cooperation Initiative, the United Kingdom UK PACT program and the United Nations, the increase in climatic ambition would be impossible.

Europe and Latin America as leaders

“Now it is a particularly favorable political moment to stop looking only at the USs who are not interested in anyway (…) There I believe that the movement has to be for Europe and Latin America,” said Laurence Tubiana, executive director of the European Climate Foundation, designated as champion of the COP30 for Europe.

Tubiana insisted that actions to combat climate change should be accelerated, support innovation, as well as an important private investment component, in order to design new cooperation models.

Likewise, former chancellor Patricia Espinosa, a special sent for Latin America before COP30, said that the combat of climate change defies “an environment of resistance and even hostility towards the policies and measures necessary to deal with this crisis.”

“Some governments and sectors are hesitating and trying to defer the climatic action (…) who now retract their sustainability commitments, sooner or later will have to correct their mistakes. Pretending to ignore the climatic and environmental crisis goes against science and humanity. And therefore will not resist the test of time,” he added.
