If you’ve been watching the Fallout TV show week to week, odds are you are aware of a mysterious countdown clock that was set to go live after the finale ended last night. We know what it is now, and it’s not what anyone expected.
Some excited folks predicted that we’d get a Fallout 3 remaster shadow drop, just like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. But the reality is very different and is setting off Fallout fans again, including on platforms like Reddit.
Explore The Wasteland Digitally
Over on the official Watch Fallout site, you can check out a new exploration module. It allows you to click on various parts of the map and get 2D and 3D tours of locations from the show, depending on the zone. This time, you can get into Mr. House’s lair and get a behind-the-scenes look at the set. Yep, that was the countdown surprise.
Fans are having a mixed reaction to the reveal, to say the least, especially those who thought we’d at least get an announcement trailer for a Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas remaster. As one X user put it: “I guess the Fallout countdown had nothing to do with the games. Amazon is doing the IP perfectly, they even got everyone all excited over nothing.” Another fan was eager to uncover more secrets, but it seems like there’s nothing else there: “Yes, but now we look in the penthouse for the next clue.”
One user is hopeful and thinks remasters are coming no matter what: “I genuinely think the pressure will mount for a remaster no matter what. The TV show will continue to get more and more popular with season 3. Bethesda would be stupid from a business standpoint not to.” Another lowered their expectations entirely, and they still weren’t met: “Yeah, I wasn’t expecting this to be a remake. I was hoping it would be a behind the scenes video or something a little more impressive though.”
A Reddit commenter is confused about the whole thing, and the efficacy of shadow drops in general: “Honestly, it’s wild they’ve said nothing. Oblivion Remastered was apparently the 3rd best-selling game for PS5s last year.”
Right now, older versions of the games are available on various marketplaces, but they lack the newer features and modern aesthetics (unless you mod the game on PC). Bethesda knows these games are fairly timeless and that re-releases are inevitable, but it didn’t seem like it was in the cards to relaunch them (or even announce them) during the second season of the TV show. Bethesda operates in its own universe in that way.
A New Vegas Remaster Would Be Better
Give Us That One First
While a Fallout 3 remaster has been dominating the conversation for weeks, a New Vegas remaster would be even better. Crafted by Obsidian, it has a rich world to draw on and potentially improve, as technical shortcomings are one of the few criticisms from many modern critics. It would hold up much better than Fallout 3 for general audiences, especially given its quirkier, brighter art style and thematic approach.
It makes sense why the Fallout TV show creators decided to visit so quickly, and it seems like we’ll get more New Vegas-inspired shenanigans going forward, one way or another.
