MEXICO CITY.- The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) revealed that the extradition of Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada has asked four times to the United States, who last Friday demanded his repatriation to Mexico with the argument that kidnapped him to deliver it .
“The procedure referred to in this person is a requirement that has already been fulfilled and with amplitude,” said the head of the FGR, Alejandro Gertz Manero, at the Government’s morning conference.
The prosecutor said that, since the capture of the co -founder of the Sinaloa cartel on July 25, 2024, the FGR “initiated an extradition procedure before the US authorities for this person who had left the country against his will, which has three current apprehension orders. ”
“We not only present it immediately, but in December last year, the United States State Department acknowledged that it already had that requirement, we have insisted four times before the previous administration (by Joe Biden, 2017-2021) of the government North American and we have not had an answer, ”he said.
Mexico will give consular assistance to ‘El Mayo’
The controversy increased after revealing on Friday that ‘El Mayo’ delivered a letter at the Mexico Consulate in New York in which he considers that the Government of Mexico “must intervene” in his case and ask for his repatriation “so that the present issue does not result in a collapse in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. ”
Gertz Manero, who stressed that this extradition request “has already been fulfilled”, argued that “it is an obligation” of Mexico to give consular assistance to ‘El Mayo’, according to the Vienna Convention, although he clarified that he has not had contact with lawyers of the capo.

“This is not a case of exception or for good or for worse, it is exactly the same, so what that request is making is referring to facts that are technically and legally very clear and that are not in doubt,” he argued.

The FGR considers a “kidnapping” the arrest in the United States of ‘El Mayo’ because, although American agents did not participate in Mexico, it was betrayed by Joaquín Guzmán López, one of Joaquín’s children ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, who uploaded him to a plane to deliver it.
“Since July of last year, when these events occurred, immediately the Government of the Republic and, therefore, the Prosecutor’s Office began a procedure for a series of crimes that were committed in Mexico, the crime of kidnapping, illegal transportation of a person against his will, ”said the prosecutor.
These facts have caused since September 9 the struggle between the features of the Chapitos and the Mayos of the Sinaloa Cartel, a state that accumulates more than 800 murders since then, according to the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, said that since the presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum began in October, they have arrested 899 people, which has “weakened” both features.
“It is a constant weakening of criminal structures, with a purpose, that do not generate violence, the violence that they themselves triggered in the entity,” he said now.
