The FIFA announced on Monday its 117 referees for the opening edition of the Club World Cup and pointed out that the members will carry body cameras and apply stricter rules on the loss of time of the goalkeepers.
The FIFA Referees Commission appointed the officers of 41 member associations -35 referees, 58 assistant referees and 24 Var- officers for the event that will be held from June 14 to July 13.
Body cameras will provide fans an unprecedented vision of the action on the pitch, according to FIFA, while the goalkeepers who retain the ball more than eight seconds will now see how a corner kick is granted to their adversaries instead of an indirect free kick.
“We believe that it is a good opportunity to provide a new experience to the spectators, through images that portray a perspective that has never been offered,” said Pierluigi Collina, president of the FIFA referees commission.
“It is also interesting to train arbitral equipment, since it is very valuable to have the possibility of seeing the same as they in order to evaluate their decisions. Therefore, it is a new experience for chains and also serves as a training tool.”
Collina highlighted the historical character of the designations for the tournament, in which 32 teams of the six FIFA Confederations will participate and that will be played in 12 stages of 11 host cities in the United States.
“As with any new competition, the selected referees will have the privilege of being part of this scoop, so I am sure that everyone will feel great emotion,” he said.
