Jake Sully is finally coming home.
The third Avatar movie, Fire & Ash, originally released in theaters on December 19 and, during its three-month run, earned over $1.4 billion at the box office. It also nabbed one Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Directed by James Cameron, the sci-fi epic was one of the most anticipated movies of 2025, continuing one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is part of a currently set to be five-film franchise ā though Cameron has also commented on how he has plans in place up to a seventh movie ā with the fourth and fifth entries currently slated for release in 2029 and 2031, respectively. After Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s successful and long theatrical run, audiences have been eagerly awaiting the film to change screens.
Now, People has revealed that Avatar: Fire & Ash will be available to purchase and rent digitally on March 31. In a time when movies have started to see increasingly smaller theatrical-to-digital release windows, Cameron’s latest sci-fi epic is a major win for those championing the theatrical experience. Avatar: Fire and Ash was released in theaters on December 19, 2025. It arrives on digital 102 days later.
After becoming available on digital on March 31, those waiting for Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s physical release will not have to wait a lot longer, as the sci-fi movie will drop on that market on May 19. Fire and Ash is expected to perform well on digital, as the James Cameron movie currently holds a near-perfect 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While it is lower than expected, Fire and Ash also has a positive critics’ score, at 66%. The audience’s appreciation of the movie translated into yet another successful box office run for the Avatar franchise. Fire and Ash is coming to digital on March 31 after grossing a whopping $1.48 billion. Based on its reported budget of around $400 million, it was a success.
On that high budget, the sci-fi movie needed to finish its box office run in the $800 million to $1 billion range just to break even. For any other franchise, that would be a tall ask, but for Cameron’s sci-fi epic, which holds the highest-grossing movie of all time, 2009’s Avatar, that was just another mission to accomplish. It profited hundreds of millions.
However, Fire and Ash does signal a change for the sci-fi franchise, as it is the lowest-grossing Avatar movie to date. The original film is currently at $2.9 billion, with 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water at a high $2.3 billion. With the franchise’s numbers in theaters dwindling, Avatar: Fire and Ash‘s performance on digital and later on streaming should help boost interest in the upcoming sequels.
