Dark Souls 2 might be a considerably more divisive entry in the franchise than both its predecessor and sequel, but it’s still a pretty great game to go back to and enjoy in 2026, serving as an important part of the overall narrative for the trilogy.
Though the base game is solid in its own right, there is an extensive and very active modding community that continues to pump out ways to make your next playthrough different, whether that’s by adding new content, or editing what’s already there.
Now, a new mod has just dropped that does exactly that, and it’s one that true fans will likely want to be aware of for the next time they get a hankering to enter the Kingdom of Drangleic.
Dark Souls 2: Firelink Edition Is By Fans, For Fans
Over on NexusMods (as first reported by DSOGaming), you should be able to find the page for Firelink Edition, a mod for the Scholar of the First Sin Dark Souls 2 release, which essentially functions as a later remastered and definitive edition of the game, that dropped in 2015.
It’s an extensive and ambitious mod that adds new visuals, custom lighting, items, enemy placement and changes to the progression, meaning if you install it, then you’re in for a very different experience. Additionally, previously locked doors have been opened up in some cases, while certain other key items may have moved entirely.
It also adds a bunch of new stuff to the equation, including new weapons, shields, and armor pieces, as well as two new Miracles for those of you who like to take advantage of magic.
The mod should particularly appeal to those who have already been through the game from start to finish (in many cases a lot of times,) and there will be very little to recognize, aside from that delicious FromSoftware formula that permeates the entire game.
Dark Souls 2 Has Always Been Underrated
As mentioned earlier, Dark Souls 2 is easily the most divisive of the three entries in the franchise, and while it doesn’t necessarily hit the same heights as the other two games, it absolutely gets an unfairly bad rap. The hit boxes can be a little janky and the controls aren’t quite as tight, but not to the point where it becomes less fun to play.
Equally, if you’re modding Dark Souls 2 with the Firelink Edition anyway, then there’s nothing stopping you from adding other creations that fine tune the game further, to a point where you’ll barely know which entry in the series you are playing anyway.
