The American automobile company Ford Motor will recall up to 119,000 vehicles due to a defect in the engine block heater that could cause a short circuit and increase the risk of fire, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported this Wednesday.

According to NHTSA, the recall affects 119,000 vehicles, including the 2019 and 2024 models of the Ford Explorer; Ford Focus manufactured between 2013 and 2018; Ford Escape from years 2013 to 2019, as well as Lincoln MKC vehicles model years 2015 and 2016, all equipped with 2.0 liter engines.

The agency explained that the engine block heater can crack and develop coolant leaks, which could cause an electrical short when connected to power, raising the risk of fire.

Warning signs include coolant stains on the floor, loss of cabin heat, engine overheating or low coolant alerts, as well as possible smoky odors due to heat damage to electrical wiring.

According to the government announcement, owners can check if their vehicle is included in the recall by entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website.

The NHTSA noted that Ford is aware of 12 reports of fires associated with this problem in Ford Escape 2.0L vehicles, with no accidents or injuries reported.
