President Claudia Sheinbaum announced this Thursday to the five members of the Evaluation Committee of the Executive Branch, which will review the profiles of the candidates for the elections of the Judicial Branch in 2025, where the retired minister, Arturo Zaldívar, stands out.
Zaldívar, current Coordinator of Policy and Government of the Presidency, was president of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) from 2019 to 2022, during the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the main promoter of judicial reform.
The committee will also be made up of Mary Cruz Cortés Ornelas, judge at the Superior Court of Justice of Tlaxcala, and Isabel Inés Romero Cruz, presiding judge of the Superior Court of Justice and the Judiciary Council of Veracruz.
As well as Javier Quijano Baz, former Morena deputy, and Vanessa Romero Rocha, lawyer – like the rest of the members – and columnist in the media.

The Legal Department of the Presidency explained in a statement that the main function of the committee is to issue the call for interested persons to participate in the evaluation and selection processes of candidates for all elected positions in the Judiciary.
“The Committee will issue its rules of operation and functioning, which guarantees its independence and impartiality. It will enjoy full autonomy for its internal organization and other determinations, and will have support for the achievement of its purposes, and will be extinguished once these goals have been fulfilled,” he stated.
He stated that for the selection of the members “their background of professionalism and honesty was primarily taken into account, which guarantees objectivity and impartiality in the delicate process entrusted to them.”
The judicial reform establishes that the three branches of government – the Legislative, the Executive and the Judicial – must designate a committee to evaluate the candidacies for the elections next June.

This Tuesday, the Legislature was the first of the three branches of Government to appoint its committee, with a qualified majority in both Chambers, the same with which they approved the controversial reform.
The deadline for the selection of the committee expires this Thursday and the Judiciary has not yet ruled on its members, amid tensions in the Government due to the resignations of Supreme Court ministers.
