The American Film Institute Festival, better known as the AFI Fest, kicks off this Wednesday with Guillermo del Toro as the guest artistic director of this edition and with the red carpet of the biographical film ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere’.
The festival, one of the most anticipated of the last quarter of the year, will run until October 27 with screenings at the iconic TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
Del Toro, who recently released his version of ‘Frankenstein’ in theaters, brought his personal vision to the festival’s programming this year by including films such as ‘Barry Lyndon’, by Stanley Kubrik; ‘The Duellists’, by Ridley Scott; or ‘Arcane Sorcerer’, by Pupi Avati.
This Wednesday the highly anticipated Scott Cooper film ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere’, a portrait of the life and work of Bruce Springsteen, will be released. The presence of the American musician is expected, as well as that of the film’s protagonist, Jeremy Allen White.
Among the most notable titles that will feature the red carpet are ‘Jay Kelly’, starring George Clooney and Adam Sandler, and written and directed by Noah Baumbach, which follows the story of a movie star who reflects on his past; ‘Cristy’, the biographical drama about former professional boxer Christy Martin, played by Sydney Sweeney; and ‘Song Sung Blue’, in which Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson play Mike and Claire Sardina.

The festival will also include screenings of films such as ‘Bugonia’, by Yorgos Lanthimos, a remake of the 2003 South Korean film ‘Save the Green Planet!’; the documentary ‘Selena y Los Dinos: A Family’s Legacy’, which explores the family legacy of the late Tex-Mex queen; and a special preview of ‘Train Dreams,’ directed by Clint Bentley.
The meeting will also offer a special approach with the filmmakers and artists who present their works, with question and answer sessions at the end of some screenings.
This Wednesday, Filipino director Lav Diaz will bring to the audience his film ‘Magellans’, starring Mexican Gael García Bernal, about the Portuguese explorer and navigator Ferdinand Magellan.
“It was incredible to play with Lav’s script and feel everything that was happening there and think about that time. It was very romantic, all the adventures; I love getting lost as an actor in places I don’t know,” García Bernal said at a pre-festival event.
‘All That’s Left of You’, the feature film about a Palestinian family over the years that had its world premiere at the Sundance Festival, will also have a question and answer session, as will Chilean Diego Céspedes’ film ‘La Misteriosa Mirada del Flamenco’ and the historical drama written and directed by Annemarie Jacir, ‘Palestine 36’.
