The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection of Mexico, Omar García Harfuch, assured this Friday that the Government has weakened the Sinaloa Cartel, founded by Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada and Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, both imprisoned in the United States and whose factions are in conflict.
Asked whether the various operations implemented in Sinaloa since October 1, when Claudia Sheinbaum’s presidency began, had managed to weaken the criminal groups of Los Chapitos and La Mayiza, the official was emphatic: “Yes, of course.”
“The number of homicides that there were at the beginning is not the same as what happens now. There have been days in Sinaloa with zero homicides. As we mentioned last time. Yesterday, unfortunately there were five (murders) but the day before there was one, the day before yesterday there were three (…) so there has definitely been progress,” he concluded.

Harfuch’s achievements
García Harfuch pointed out that what they have done mainly has been to weaken the criminal cells that generate the most violence.
“Almost 50 priority objectives have been detained, 400 vehicles and more than 600 high-powered firearms have been seized,” he argued.
And he assured that progress will continue in strengthening the security strategy.
The state in the northwest of the country is suffering from a wave of violence generated by the war between the main factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, Los Mayos and Los Chapitos, which has left nearly 600 murders since September 9.
This is due to the dispute over control of the group after the handover last July to US authorities of Zambada, one of the founders of the Sinaloa Cartel, by Joaquín Guzmán López, one of ‘Chapo’s’ sons.
