Genaro García Luna, Secretary of Public Security during Felipe Calderón’s administration, was sentenced to 460 months in prison, just over 38 years, in the United States for four criminal charges.

Genaro García Luna, 56, was sentenced by Federal Judge Brian Cogan in federal court in Brooklyn.

Prosecutors had argued that Genaro García Luna should face life in prison after being found guilty in February 2023 of participating in a criminal drug enterprise, participating in several conspiracies and making false statements.

On September 19, they argued in a court filing that García Luna accepted millions of dollars in bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel, once led by Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán Loera, and that in exchange he saved its members from arrest and protected their shipments of cocaine.

Genaro García Luna’s lawyer, César de Castro, had urged Judge Cogan to sentence him to no more than the mandatory minimum, noting that he has already spent almost five years in prison since his client’s arrest in 2019.

“A sentence of 20 years would represent approximately the duration of Mr. García Luna’s entire career as a public servant of the Mexican government,” said the defender.
