Former Secretary of Public Security Genaro García Luna, sentenced to 38 years in prison for drug trafficking and organized crime, was transferred from New York to a federal prison in Oklahoma, according to the website of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP).
García Luna is now in the Federal Transfer Center (FTC), a prison located in Oklahoma City that houses more than a thousand inmates, according to its website.
The Bureau does not specify the reasons for the transfer of the Mexican, who until now remained in the Brooklyn Metropolitan Detention Center, where other personalities such as the former president of Honduras Juan Orlando Hernández or the music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs are also held.
This prison, which houses more than 1,300 inmates, is known for its harsh conditions and frequent violence in its facilities.

The Mexican was sentenced to 38 years in prison and his BOP file notes that his release from prison will take place on August 8, 2052.
García Luna, 56, who was arrested in Dallas in 2019 and has since remained in US custody, was found guilty in February 2023 of five crimes of cocaine trafficking, relationship with a criminal enterprise (the Sinaloa Cartel) and false testimony after a jury trial.
The former secretary of security was the head of public security during the six-year term of President Felipe Calderón, a period in which he theoretically led the ‘war on drugs’ strategy.
