Alejandro Gertz Manero defended the legality of his career in his appearance in the Senate, and affirmed that his actions as Mexican ambassador to the United Kingdom will strictly adhere to the historical principles of Mexican foreign policy.

The former prosecutor was questioned by Senator Luis Donaldo Colosio, of Movimiento Ciudadano, about his appointment, according to a note from the Quadratín México news agency.

The legislator expressed legal and institutional concerns about Gertz Manero’s resignation from the FGR, pointing out that a diplomatic invitation does not constitute, in itself, a serious cause according to the law.

He stressed the need to strengthen the Mexican Foreign Service and questioned how the appointment of Gertz Manero would contribute to the credibility of the State before the United Kingdom and international organizations.

Gertz Manero maintained that Mexico will maintain a firm position in international organizations based in London and assured that its diplomatic function will be aimed at defending national interests within the current multilateral framework.

The session of the Senate Political and International Affairs Commission was marked by the absence of interventions by parliamentarians from National Action, PRI and Labor Party.

Gertz Manero was approved as representative of Mexico in the United Kingdom with 10 votes in favor and one abstention from Colosio Riojas, and the minutes were passed to the Board of Directors of the permanent Commission for approval.
