Openai presented a function that will allow users to make purchases through Chatgpt, in association with ETSY and Shopify.

Merchants must pay an OpenAI commission for each purchase completed, although this will not affect the prices of their products. For users, instant payment will have no additional cost.

The movement opens a new source of income for OpenAI, taking advantage of the intense user traffic in Chatgpt, in addition to its traditional subscription model.

“Chatgpt users in the US, both of the Plus, pro and free versions, can now buy directly from ETSY vendors in the US from the chat, and soon more than one million shopify merchants will be added, such as Glossier, Skims, Spanx and Vuori,” Openai said in a blog post.

As of Monday, instant payment will admit purchases of a single article, but OpenAi indicated that it will add carts with several items and expand both the number of businesses and the regions.

ETSY’s shares rose 7.3%, while Shopify titles that are quoted in the United States recounted 4.5% after the announcement.

“Shopify merchants can sell directly through conversations in ChatgPT – without links or redirections, only fluid trade -” said the platform on their website.

Etsy’s product and technology director, Rafe Colburn, said that purchases enhanced by AI and agents represent significant opportunities for the online market. He also noted that ETSY is working with a technological partner – without revealing the name – to fluently integrate the discovery of products into mobile experiences.

Openai said the trade protocol with agents will open (agentic commerce protocol), built with the Stripe payments, which promotes the payment system.
