Since its reboot back in 2018, the God of War franchise has gained a new lease of life, so it comes as no surprise that fans are already thinking ahead to the future and the potential arrival of God of War 3. Launching as God of War in 2018, before being followed by God of War Ragnarök in 2022, the Santa Monica reboot series has revived the action-adventure series which first began its life way back in 2005. Thanks to its popularity, an original trilogy remake was recently announced, alongside the arrival of a live-action adaptation, and even its Sons of Sparta spin-off game.
All in all, the God of War franchise is reaching unprecedented heights, but what is next for the reboot series?
God Of War Is “Replacing” Kratos With Someone New
With the third installment reportedly in development, fans have one major question: will Kratos take the lead once more, or will God of War 3 have a brand-new protagonist? In the original trilogy and the reboot series, the Spartan warrior Kratos has led our tale, but recent rumors suggest that another familiar face may become our next main character.
Rumors began in earnest back in July 2025, when Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier shared more information on Cory Barlog’s next game. Barlog, who directed 2018’s God of War, is reportedly working on a game which “is not a new IP, but it might feel like one.” Following this, well-known leaker NateTheHate spoke out about the rumors, adding that the new game “is set within the God of War universe and the lead character will be Faye. Gameplay is said to differ from the Norse God of War games, with more of a focus on action.”
Although there is a lot to unpack here, the most important piece of information is that Faye may be our brand-new lead, making for quite an interesting twist on the franchise so far. As the second wife of Kratos and the mother of Atreus, Faye has more than a good enough story to tell, especially as she is a Giant from Jötunheim, intent on hiding her true identity from her family.
Faye Is The Perfect Lead For A New God Of War Game
There is no denying that Kratos has been an excellent protagonist, and fans have become used to his gruff personality since his arrival way back in 2005, but maybe it is now time for a change. Well, over on r/KotakuInAction, players discussed the potential arrival of Faye after it was originally reported by Dexerto last month. As you can imagine, replacing a man with a woman in such a big franchise has gone down as well as you would expect, and the comments really are a lesson in sexism and misogyny. With some “joking” that inventory management would include making sandwiches and vacuuming, you can understand what I mean.
Nevertheless, I happen to think that Faye would make an excellent addition to the God of War franchise, and put a whole new spin on a world set amongst the legends of myth, especially if a future installment takes place in Ancient Egypt as rumors suggest.
