Intentional homicides in Mexico fell 16.3% during the first quarter of the presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum, who took office on October 1, Marcela Figueroa, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), stated this Thursday with preliminary figures. .
“December was the month with the lowest record of victims in this period, with a daily average of 72.8 victims, this represents a decrease of 16.3% between September and December 2024, that is, since the beginning of the President’s Administration. “Figueroa declared at the morning government conference.
The December murders compare with the average of 87 victims per day in September, the last month of the presidency of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), who belongs to the same party as Sheinbaum, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena). and concluded his six-year term with a record of more than 196,000 murders.
Even so, Figueroa maintained that “between 2018 and 2024 there was a decrease of 18.3%” in the daily number of homicides.
“While in 2018, 100.5 victims were registered daily on average, according to the Inegi (National Institute of Statistics and Geography), a figure that has been in constant decline year after year, 2024 closed with a daily average of 82.1 victims of this crime. “, he explained.
This would imply a total of 30,048 homicides in all of 2024, but the SESNSP is expected to publish the final report for the year on January 20, after receiving updated information from state prosecutors’ offices.
Figueroa argued that seven of the country’s 32 entities account for 49.4% of the country’s homicides: Guanajuato, Baja California, the State of Mexico, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Guerrero and Nuevo León, which together add up to 14,862.
“According to this information, since the beginning of the Administration and during the first 100 days of Government, intentional homicides have shown a decrease in six of the seven states where half of the homicides in the country are concentrated,” held.
