The UNAM demanded this Friday a reduction in its budget for 2025, despite President Claudia Sheinbaum’s promise to increase it by at least inflation.
The university indicated in a statement that it was aware of the proposed cut to the federal subsidy presented in the draft Federal Expenditure Budget (PEF) for next year.
He warned that the reduction “is in contrast to what was stated shortly before by President Claudia Sheinbaum, who, when responding to an express question during the morning conference, assured that autonomous educational institutions would have an increase similar to inflation.”
According to the project presented this Friday, which will be analyzed by the Chamber of Deputies, UNAM would receive 49,108.4 million pesos by 2025, while in 2024 what was approved was 54,268.4 million pesos, which translates into a real reduction of 9.5%.

UNAM highlighted that sufficient resources are essential to guarantee quality public higher education and to serve its 373,000 students.
“A sustained investment is required to care for 373,000 students, for infrastructure, for the updating of academic programs and for the development of research and the dissemination of culture,” highlighted the educational institution.
He warned that the cut would affect nearly 110,000 students from economically vulnerable backgrounds, who depend on scholarships to continue their studies.
UNAM pointed out that over the last decade it has implemented austerity measures and rational use of resources.
He agreed with Sheinbaum’s stance on improving spending efficiency and maintaining transparency.
“We trust that what was expressed by the president of Mexico, of not reducing the budget for the autonomous universities, will prevail in the end, that the adjustment to the PEF will be made before being approved, for which we appeal to the sensitivity of the ladies and gentlemen deputies,” noted the UNAM.
