President Claudia Sheinbaum issued on Thursday a decree that reforms the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives, in which it prohibits and sanctions the contribution of weapons reserved for the exclusive use of the permanent armed force and those manufactured in a three -dimensional or artisanal way.
The decree, published Thursday in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), also prohibits and sanctions, among other things, the use of private vehicles armored with adaptations to use weapons.
It is also indicated that the Ministry of National Defense (Defense) is what “can authorize the use of weapons, ammunition and materials destined exclusively for war, by justification of need, individually or as a corporation.”

In addition, he points out that “based on the principle of reciprocity, the Secretariat of Defense” can authorize the temporary carrying of weapons to foreign public servants of migration or customs, duly accredited before the federal government, who participate in the immigration review in international traffic points. “
He adds that “the Federal Executive Power, the governments of the federal entities, of the municipalities and the mayors of Mexico City must carry out permanent educational campaigns of peace and disarmament cultures that are intended to reduce the possession, protection and use of weapons of any kind.”
“These campaigns must include information on explosive materials, pyrotechnic artifice and related chemicals, as well as the risks in their manipulation,” he adds.
The publication pointed out that article 1 of the aforementioned law “is public order, social interest and general observance throughout the national territory.”
And it is intended to regulate the registration, control, surveillance and sanction of the activities related to firearms, ammunition, artifice, explosives and related chemicals, as well as its components, accessories and other objects that this law regulates.

On April 30, the Senate approved to reform the Federal Law on Firearms and Explosives, with the aim of strengthening state control over the weapons, updating the current legal framework and hardensing penalties against traffic and illegal use of weapons in the country, in addition to establishing a new legal framework of equipment and accessories, which seeks the culture of peace and disarmament.
