The Government of Mexico insisted this Monday that the “main tool” available to combat measles is vaccination against the viral disease, given the outbreak of cases that the country has been experiencing since last year.

Through a statement, the Ministry of Health urged to reinforce measures against measles, whose vaccine, it recalled, is “safe, free and highly effective.”

Likewise, he stressed that this disease is under constant monitoring by the authorities through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, which allows “cases to be detected, confirmed by laboratory and the identification of circulating genotypes, in compliance with international commitments regarding health surveillance.”

According to official figures, since last year there have been more than 6,800 corroborated cases, while just over 2,000 remain under study.

During this period, Mexican health authorities administered more than 11.8 million measles vaccines nationwide, “prioritizing girls, boys and the susceptible population.”

“It should be noted that more than 90% of confirmed cases correspond to people without a history of vaccination. Serious symptoms and deaths are concentrated mainly in populations with incomplete vaccination schedules, young girls and boys, as well as in people with malnutrition or weakened immune systems,” the information note added.

Faced with this situation, the Ministry of Health activated containment protocols from the beginning, which includes measures such as the deployment of rapid response teams in the event of possible eventualities, as well as the active search for cases and the intensification of the vaccination program.

Questioned about the increase in cases in her daily press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured this Monday that there are “enough doses,” so she asked the population to go get vaccinated, particularly minors.

“There are enough vaccines and they are in all health centers in the country,” the president stressed.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, health authorities are scheduled to attend the presidential conference to offer a report on the current state of the viral disease.
