The Tax Administration Service (SAT) and the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM) identified 40 customs agents who presented irregularities and omissions in foreign trade activities of merchandise and, to date, seven patents of these agents have been canceled. .
Customs agents are the people authorized by the State to carry out the import and export procedures for taxpayers’ merchandise before customs.
Among the irregular practices that were detected were abuses when importing, improperly applying the reduced rate benefit; and abuses in the benefits of certified companies that do not pay Value Added Tax (VAT) for the importation of merchandise.
Likewise, it was identified that customs agents have carried out abuses and irregularities in the importation of various merchandise that did not pay contributions correctly upon entry into the country.
“(Customs agents) are already located and we will see what other actions follow, the authorities are already investigating this,” said the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, during the morning conference of President Claudia Sheinbaum.
In this context and with the objective of avoiding illicit practices, the SAT and ANAM issued rules to combat smuggling, evasion and tax avoidance, in which it was established that the 861 active customs agents are co-responsible for imports and exports, as well as the payment of contributions, for which they may be subject to various sanctions.
“The SAT and ANAM will reinforce the strategy to put the Mexican customs system in order and the inspection program for customs agents, as has already happened in the application of these strategies and the modernization of customs in Tijuana, Felipe Ángeles International Airport, Nuevo Laredo and Manzanillo”, was emphasized in President Sheinbaum’s morning conference.
