Despite the drought, Mexico will not have difficulty delivering water to the United States at the end of this month, and thus resolving the controversy over the 1944 Water Treaty, given the warning of sanctions of the US President, Donald Trump, government authorities announced on Tuesday.

“We are not going to have any difficulty to fulfill that commitment and then, based on the runoff and on the conditions that are lived on both sides, we will establish a mechanism to be able to regularize it,” said Efraín Morales López, head of the National Water Commission (Conagua), during the morning of the people.

The official recalled that around 2,157 million cubic meters are committed per five -year period, although he acknowledged that due to the extreme droughts that were lived in recent years there have been problems that this amount can be delivered.

“However, from the dialogue an agreement for the delivery of water was established, which established an amount of water that we would have to deliver at the end of October, early November. Then, we will not have any difficulty to fulfill that commitment,” he insisted.

In that sense, President Claudia Sheinbaum said that permanent communication with the United States authorities and all border states are agreed with the process. Therefore, he reiterated that there will be no problem to deliver the water to the US.

“Important rains are still expected in that area. So, we think there will be no problem,” he said.

Mexico must deliver to the US between 400 and 518 million cubic meters of water in the period between May and October 2025, to fulfill and resolve the controversy over the 1944 Water Treaty.

The binational agreement establishes that Mexico must deliver each five -year period about 2,160 million cubic meters to the United States for the rivers that share on the border, while Mexicans stay with 9,250 million cubic meters, almost four times more.

The Government of Mexico, which has argued that the drought at the border prevented him from delivering the established amounts, has argued that the United States has agreed what agreement offers benefits for both countries, “so its renegotiation is not considered necessary.”
