The Ministry of Health confirmed the first detected case of the influenza A H3N2 subtype K virus, in the country’s capital, and assured that it does not represent a cause for alarm for the population.

In a statement, the agency specified that the case was confirmed by the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER), located in Mexico City.

The patient “is now recovered,” after responding favorably to outpatient treatment with antiviral medication, the note noted.

The agency added that the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave) maintains permanent monitoring and analysis to promptly detect any possible case.

In addition, he pointed out that this new variant of influenza “presents characteristics similar to those of the seasonal influenza that circulates every year,” so its clinical management is the same and vaccination is the main prevention measure.

“Therefore, it does not represent a cause for alarm for the population,” he said.

The health authority urged the population to go and get the vaccines corresponding to the winter season, particularly against influenza, covid-19 and pneumococcus.

Likewise, he highlighted the effectiveness of these vaccines in “reducing risks, preventing complications and hospitalizations,” especially for infants, older adults, pregnant women, health personnel and people with comorbidities.

In case of testing positive for influenza, the SSa recommended early treatment, and if necessary, receiving standard antiviral treatment, in addition to wearing a face mask and maintaining isolation measures.

The influenza A H3N2 subtype K virus, known as ‘superflu’, is a variant that has recently circulated in Europe and the United States.

It is characterized by a greater transmission capacity compared to other seasonal subtypes, although it has not been associated with greater lethality.

Health authorities in various countries have indicated that the cases detected respond to antiviral treatment and that seasonal vaccines offer protection against this variant.
