The global environmental lobby Greenpeace added his voice on Monday to the protests against the celebrity wedding held this week in Venice between the American billionaire Jeff Bezos and the journalist Laura Sánchez.

The event, which is expected to attract about 200 guests, including the daughter of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, Ivanka, and his son -in -law, Jared Kushner, as well as dozens of stars of cinema, fashion and business, has been nicknamed “The wedding of the century.”

But some locals see the celebration as the last sign of the blatant merchantization of a beautiful but fragile city that has long been invaded by tourism while constantly after it.

Greenpeace Activists Italy and the British group “Everyone hates Elon” (Musk) deployed a giant banner in the central Plaza de San Marcos with a photo of Bezos laughing and a sign that said: “If you can rent Venice for your wedding, you can pay more taxes.”

The Local Police arrived to talk to the activists and verify their identification documents, before they display their banner.

Bezos will make considerable beneficial donations in Venice

“The problem is not the wedding, the problem is the system. We believe that a great billionaire cannot rent a city for its pleasure,” Simona Abbate, one of the protesters, told Reuters.

Mayor Luigi Brugnaro and regional governor Luca Zaia have defended the wedding, arguing that he will bring an unexpected economic gain to local businesses, including motor ships and gondolas that operate their innumerable channels.

Zaia said that celebrations were expected to cost between 23 and 34 million dollars.

Bezos will also make considerable beneficial donations, including one million euros for Corila, an academic consortium that studies the ecosystem of the Venice Lagoon, the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera and the Ansa news agency reported on Sunday.

Earlier this month, banners against Bezos were hung in the bell tower of San Marcos and in the famous Rialto bridge, while the locals threatened with peaceful blockages against the event, saying that Venice needed public services and homes, not VIP and excess tourism.

The exact dates and the places of the dazzling nuptials remain confidential, but the celebrations are expected to take place for three days, probably between June 26 and 28.
