(EFE) .- The American United Auto Workers (UAW) union described as “a victory” the decision of General Motors (GM) to transfer the production of two models from Mexico to the US, and added that it begins to “reverse the damage caused by the North American Free Trade Agreement.”

The guild, who during the last presidential elections in the US supported the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, in front of Donald Trump, now supported the tariff policy of the US President, who has imposed 25% tariffs on imports in the sector.

“GM’s decision to invest billions in American plants and give priority to the country’s workers is exactly the reason we support these car tariffs,” said the president of the UAW, Shawn Fain.

On Tuesday, GM announced that it will transfer the production of the Chevrolet Blazer and Chevrolet Equinox models, which are currently assembled in the Mexican plants of Ramos Arizpe and San Luis Potosí, to factories in the US, for which it will invest 4,000 million dollars.

GM said the investment will go to Orion plants (Mistigan), Fairfax (Kansas) and Spring Hill (Tennessee) and that the transfer will allow the company’s production to reach two million vehicles a year.

UAW said that it has been denouncing that automobile manufacturers in the US have transferred factories to Mexico and other countries, cut salaries of US workers and closed plants.

“More than two million vehicles a year have disappeared from US production lines in the last decade, while factories in Mexico and other regions of low salaries flourished under an exploiting commercial system,” the union explained.

Fain added that the guild is willing to collaborate “whoever (Democrat, Republican or independent) that is truly committed to putting an end to the ‘free trade’ disaster and building an economy that respects the working class.”
