Guatemala City, (EFE) .- The Government of Guatemala sent a diplomatic note of protest to Mexico for the incursion of its security forces on Sunday to the territory of the Central American country, during a “confusing” armed confrontation.

The Guatemalan Foreign Ministry explained in a statement that the protest note was sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the incidents registered in the table, border town of the municipality of Democracy, in the department (province) of Huehuetenango.

In the document, Guatemala protested by the incursion of elements of the immediate reaction force (Pakal) of Chiapas to Guatemalan territory.

“The incursion to the territory in urban and commercial zone was carried out outside the security coordination mechanisms between the two countries, endangered the lives of civilians and does not contribute to the relations of good neighborhood between states,” says the press release.

On Monday, Guatemala had affirmed that he would reinforce his “shares on land and air” on the border with Mexico after the “confusing” armed confrontation registered in Huehuetenango, in the northwest of the Central American country.

This was assured by Guatemalan Defense Minister Henry Sáenz, at a press conference, referring to said armed confrontation, which took place, he said, after Mexican security forces entered the local territory during a prosecution of criminals.

Sáenz indicated that during the “shooting exchange a confusing environment was created” and therefore the Guatemalan security forces made “the decision not to get involved to avoid dead of civil society.”

The minister indicated that during the shooting “unfortunately” a specialist from the Army of Guatemala “resulted in a gunshot wound in the right thigh”, which does not represent risks for his life.

Similarly, through a press release on Monday, the Guatemalan government had also pointed out that together with Mexico they would seek to “clarify the facts” that took place in the border area, caused “by organized crime.”
