On the eve of a party in which 2.5 million people are expected, the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro received this Tuesday from Guinness World Records the title that certifies it as the organizer of the largest New Year’s Eve party in the world.

The title was received by the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, in a ceremony on the main stage set up on the famous Copacabana beach for Wednesday’s ‘Reveillon’ party.

The commemorative plaque was presented by Camila Borenstein, representative of Guinness and one of the judges of the organization that publishes the famous Guinness Book of world records.

According to Borenstein, the title certifies that, on December 31 of last year, a record 2.5 million people greeted the arrival of 2025 at the party organized on Copacabana beach.

The figure does not take into account the total number of people who participate in the different public farewell parties of the year organized by Rio de Janeiro on its beaches and parks (thirteen this year), which is estimated to have reached 5 million last year.

“It is an honor to receive this validation from Guinness in relation to the size of our Reveillon. We know that no other city in the world organizes events for as many people and with as much consistency as Rio de Janeiro,” said Paes upon receiving the plaque.

According to Guinness World Records, the title was awarded taking into account not only the record number of participants but also the magnitude of the artistic programming, the territorial extension of the event and its cultural importance.

“Rio de Janeiro won that title after we received various tests, including with drones, verifying the record of participants in the last edition of the Reveillon,” said Borenstein.

The ceremony took place on the eve of a new party in which the city expects to receive another 2.5 million participants on its famous beach, an audience larger than the population of 99.9% of the municipalities in Brazil.

In this year’s edition, there will be three stages in Copacabana, one of which will be exclusive for Gospel music lovers.

According to the mayor’s office, this year’s fireworks show will last 12 minutes and will be extended to a larger audience, since the rockets will be launched from 19 rafts distributed along Copacabana beach, double the number of boats used last year.

The party will also feature a show with 1,200 drones that will design figures synchronized with the fireworks.

Among the artists who will perform this year on the stages of Copacabana, the legendary Gilberto Gil and Ney Matogrosso, two of the greatest representatives of the so-called Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), stand out, as well as the singers Belo and Alcione, icons of samba, and Alok.

The party will end with a performance by the ‘battery’ (percussion orchestra) of the award-winning Beija Flor samba school.

According to the mayor’s office, there will be 70 musical attractions in the 13 different stages spread throughout Rio de Janeiro.

According to the municipality, the Reveillon should attract about five million people this year, of which 2.5 million will be concentrated in Copacabana.
