Halo’s Master Chief Replacement Isn’t An Obvious Choice

As far as iconic characters from giant video game franchises go, few are as immediately recognizable and beloved as Halo’s Covenant-killing protagonist Master Chief.

Ever since Combat Evolved first dropped for the original Xbox, the character has been firmly rooted in the cultural canon of gamers across the world and, despite some dodgy entries in the series since, that hasn’t really ever changed.

That said, Halo is very much at a point where it needs to revolutionize what it’s doing in order to get fans back on board. If the developer chooses to do that by getting rid of Master Chief and replacing him with a new protagonist, fans can’t really agree on exactly who they want that to be.

Would Halo Ever Replace Master Chief?

Over on Reddit, one fan of the franchise asked the community exactly who they would like to see in the protagonist role if Master Chief is ever retired from the position. The suggestions were all over the place with some genuinely compelling arguments across the board.

“Not gonna lie, I think it should be a Spartan 3. Something like Master Chief retired and is now training the Spartan 4’s or even Locke & Osiris but with the team mechanics of Reach,” one comment read.

“Big fan of Jerome. Works that he’s still a SII but still young due to being in Cyro for so long. Also, he has a super interesting set up of being removed from the main events and coming back to a completely different universe with the spirit of fire,” another added.

A third shared a different opinion, saying, “They have Nathan Fillion as Buck. This is the answer. His charisma is a license to print money. And Chief needs more personality in the games again. That dry sense of humor we got in Halo 1 and 2 needs to come back.”

The Halo Series Has Some Strong Leads

The fact remains that the Halo series has featured some pretty iconic characters over the years and any one of those could easily step in to replace Master Chief and lead the series into an entirely new era.

Jerome is probably the one that seems to crop up most amongst fans, but the aforementioned buck also appears to be a popular choice. Whatever does end up happening, we have to hope the next mainline game in the series does enough to turn the Halo ship around, because it would be an enormous shame if something that culturally important were to disappear forever.
