President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he has no plans to fire the president of the Federal Reserve (Fed), Jerome Powell, but wants interest rates to fall.

“I have no intention of saying goodbye,” Trump told journalists in the Oval Hall.

“I would like to see it a little more active about your idea of lowering interest rates,” he added.

Trump’s statement is a reduction in tension after several days of hard criticism of Powell for no longer reducing rates since his arrival to power.

Criticisms were often accompanied by threatening comments, such as the publication last week on social networks that Powell’s cessation could not be soon enough, something that scared the financial markets that see the independence of the Fed as a pillar of its credibility in the world financial scenario.

But although those threats seem to have set aside for now, their criticisms of the Fed rates policy remain as sharp.

“We believe it is the perfect time to lower the rates, and we would like our boss (of the Fed) to do it soon or time, instead of the afternoon,” Trump said.
