Given the imposition of 25% tariffs ordered by Donald Trump, the executive president of the National Association of Buses, trucks and tractocamions (ANPACT), Rogelio Arzate, called for strengthening the dialogue between nations before continuing unilateral decisions that harm industries and consumers on both sides of the border.

“If the imposition of tariff rates continues, manufacturers, productive sector and consumers of both countries will be affected, so the call is reiterated so that the dialogue intensifies and is constructive, without making precipitated or unilateral decisions,” said the business representative.

He added that the value chain of the automotive industry of heavy vehicles between Mexico and the United States was based since decades ago.

He said that since the signing of the First Free Trade Agreement, the commercial exchange between the industries of both nations has been strengthened, to such a degree that today is fully integrated.

The president of the agency, which represents the leaders producing commercial vehicles and engines since 1992, said that the components used for the manufacture of heavy vehicles cross the border between Mexico and the United States, so “the tariff impact would be a snowball and generate additional economic impacts and administrative foreign trade processes that will affect operational efficiency”.

North America has enjoyed stability, competitiveness and investment due to the cooperation that had existed so far, he said.

“It has also allowed to boost economic growth, employment and regional development favoring the supply chain in both countries,” he added.

“The impact is not only for the final customer but also for the logistics chain, that is, the carriers that move the load and for the industries required by heavy vehicles to transfer supplies, goods, equipment and personnel in both nations,” he said.

“From ANPACT, we trust that the actions headed by President Claudia Sheinbaum; The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, and Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente allow to resume a constructive dialogue immediately, to find joint solutions to maintain the stability of the sector, ”he said.

“The commercial relationship between Mexico and the United States must be maintained under the principles of mutual cooperation and respect, guaranteeing the continuity of productive integration that has been key to the growth and development of the automotive industry in North America,” he said.

“The treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada is key to strengthening the competitiveness of the region,” he concluded.
