Several people have died after a helicopter with five passengers – among them several minors – crashed in the Hudson River in New York this Thursday, according to local media.

The incident occurred around 15:15 local time, and according to some local media, the dead of the dead could be even greater.

The Mayor of New York, Eric Adams, described the accident as a “tragic accident.”

Some media say that the six helicopter occupants have died, but no official source has confirmed it so far.

“Due to a helicopter accident on the Hudson River, in the vicinity of West Side Highway and Spring Street, emergency vehicles and traffic delays in the surrounding areas are expected,” said New York Police Department (NYPD), in an X publication.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicated that the helicopter was a Bell 206, but indicates that the number of people on board is unknown.

“The FAA and the National Board of Transportation Security (NTSB) will investigate the incident. The NTSB will lead the research and provide updated information,” notes the FAA in an X post.

Fox News shared a video in which you can see how the helicopter plummeted several tens of meters after apparently losing the tail, crashing against the waters of Hudson.

At least 32 people have died in helicopter accidents in New York since 1977; The most recent in 2019, when a helicopter used for executive trips collided with the roof of a Manhattan skyscraper in a restricted airspace and the pilot died, according to ABC.

An accident similar to this Thursday could be the one that occurred in 2018, when five of the six occupants of a helicopter who had taken off from New Jersey and fell to the icy waters of the East River, the other river that bathes Manhattan.
