Henry Cavill unveiled a first look at his upcoming remake of Highlander. Directed by Chad Stahelski, of John Wick fame, the film is a reboot of the fantasy action franchise that originally starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and Roxanne Hart.
The Man of Steel actor will star as Connor MacLeod (originated by Lambert), an immortal Scottish warrior who is tasked with confronting his arch-rival in modern-day New York. Cavill took to Instagram to share a first look at the highly anticipated reboot of Highlander. One of the photos shows the actor wearing a trench coat with an exhausted expression on his face. The second image pulls back the metaphorical curtain by revealing a mic above Cavill as he films a scene while holding a sheathed sword.
In his Instagram caption, Cavill admitted that filming this movie has been “quite the journey for me,” which he plans to open up about in the future. For now, though, he wanted to share what turned out to be a “special moment” in his life. “I hope you enjoy,” Cavill told his fans.

As of this writing, over 600,000 Instagram users have liked Cavill’s post, with thousands of fans taking to the comments section to express their excitement at the Highlander reboot. Some fans shared the original film’s famous quote, “There can only be one!“
The Russell Mulcahy-directed Highlander was released in 1986 but failed to capture the attention of moviegoers at the time. The film earned almost $13 million at the box office against a $16 million budget. While 20th Century Fox didn’t recoup its money, Highlander went on to become a cult classic.
Critics who reviewed the film gave Highlander mostly positive reviews; the fantasy-action flick currently holds a 69% on Rotten Tomatoes (the audience score is 79%). Despite the underwhelming box office numbers, several Highlander sequels were released from 1991 to 2007, including Highlander II: The Quickening, Highlander III: The Sorcerer, Highlander: Endgame, Highlander: The Source and Highlander: The Search for Vengeance.
Vengeance aside, the sequels were not well-received by critics or audiences. The Search for Vengeance, which was an animated film, has a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 69%, a definite improvement over its predecessors. Along with the films, three TV shows (Highlander: The Series, Highlander: The Animated Series and Highlander: The Raven) were also made in the 1990s.
After all of these sequels and spin-offs, Highlander is now going back to its roots with a remake of the classic film, with Cavill in the starring role. Other cast members include Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Djimon Hounsou, and Max Zhang.
This reboot, which was written by Michael Finch, has been in development for several years, and now fans are finally getting a first look at Cavill and Stahelski’s version of Highlander. A release date has not been announced yet.
