Though everyone was expecting Hogwarts Legacy to do very well, given the substantial existing fan base for Harry Potter products, few would have predicted just how much it would chime with players.
Sony confirmed that it secured its position as the third most played single-player game on the platform, in terms of playtime, with the average player spending tens or even hundreds of hours exploring its winding corridors and wider open world.
As such, it was little surprise when Warner Bros. confirmed that we wouldn’t be getting much in the way of post-launch content, with developer Avalanche Studios instead moving on to the sequel. Given how long development cycles take these days, that doesn’t usually mean too much, but the next game could be coming a lot sooner than we may have expected.
Hogwarts Legacy 2 Is Coming
Hogwarts Legacy 2 is definitely coming, and the leadership at Warner Bros. Discovery are still very much pursuing gaming moving forward, despite major issues with the division over the last year or so.
In an interview with Variety, WBD head honcho JB Perrette confirmed that, whilst 2026 is set to be relatively quiet for the gaming side of the media behemoth, big things are to come in the following years.
“The real fruits will start coming in in ’27-’28 when we return to some of our biggest franchises,” he confirmed. Whilst this isn’t a direct reference to Hogwarts Legacy, the game and it’s pending sequel remain huge releases for the company, alongside being attached to one of their most significant IPs.
The other convenient piece of evidence that supports the above being a reference to a Wizarding World game release is the fact that the HBO-produced TV series is also set to debut in early-2027, so they’ll almost certainly want the two to line-up as closely as possible.
Warner Bros. Is Undergoing Some Huge Changes
2025 was a very tumultuous year for Warner Bros. Discovery as a whole, which significantly harmed a lot of the products and IPs they were working on in the gaming division. The entire company was placed up for sale, with Netflix serving as the initial front runners. Since then, the streaming giant has backed out, paving the way for Paramount Skydance to secure the media giant for $111 billion.
The damage was already done in some quarters though, with the shuttering of Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith Productions (who were working on a new Wonder Woman game), as well as Player First Games (developers of MultiVersus), and WB Games San Diego.
Things do seem to be settling down now though, so fingers crossed that the path is now clear for Hogwarts Legacy 2 to launch without too many issues.
