Houston’s LaBranch Federal Building Joins Sell-off List

The federal government added another Houston asset to its lists of properties to cut under President Donald Trump’s downsizing.

The U.S. General Services Administration included the LaBranch Federal Building at 2320 LaBranch Street in Houston on its latest list of federal properties slated for accelerated disposition, the Houston Chronicle reported.

The 75,000-square-foot building was constructed for the Veterans Administration in 1946, but also temporarily housed NASA’s manned spaceflight center in 1962 during the Johnson Space Center’s construction. It sits just south of downtown and is the office of local uniformed federal police.

The building is part of a shorter list of properties up for sale after the GSA abruptly pulled down a previous list earlier this month that included more than 440 buildings across the country on the Department of Government Efficiency’s order  — including three in Houston.

The LaBranch property isn’t on that broader list, which included the Mickey Leland Federal Building at 1919 Smith Street, the Houston Custom House at 701 San Jacinto and the Alliance Tower at 8701 South Gessner.

The new list, posted March 21, includes only eight buildings nationwide, including one in San Antonio. The initiative is part of an effort to reduce the federal real estate footprint and curb taxpayer spending on vacant or underused space, the GSA said.

The agency said it is accepting non-binding term sheets for the list of eight and that disposing of “non-core” assets would allow investment in higher-quality workspaces aligned with federal agencies’ needs.

The downsizing follows years of shifting office usage across the country, including the impacts of remote work.
