How Swifties Made It About Taylor Swift

The Olympic men’s free skate finals didn’t go as planned, and now Swifties are claiming it was Taylor Swift‘s revenge. When Ilia Malinin took the ice on Friday the 13th, for the men’s finals, everyone was expecting him to come out on top and take home the gold. Shockingly, he didn’t do very well and ended up in eighth place.

Earlier, he took second place in men’s short, followed by first place in the men’s free skate, which crowned the USA the winner of the Olympic team skate competition. When it was time for the individual round, he came in first during the shorts, but failed to make the podium for the finals. So what does Taylor Swift have to do with all this?

The timing of the event already wasn’t working in Malinin’s favor, as Friday the 13th is often thought of as an unlucky day. However, there is one person who loves the number 13 and is known to feel extra lucky on the superstitious day. Before the competition, Malinin was interviewed about his music taste.

While the 21-year-old admitted he loves all kinds of music, his tone changed when he was asked if he listens to Taylor Swift. “No,” was his response, before admitting he lied earlier, and there actually is some music he doesn’t like.

When Swifties found this out, they were furious and joked that the reason he had done so poorly in the finals was that he dared to disrespect the pop superstar. For years, Swifties have watched Swift’s enemies get their karma after disrespecting her.

They nicknamed the phenomenon Tayvoodoo. In 2022, Swift played into the joke, releasing the track “Karma” on her album Midnights. Swift claims that she keeps her side of the street clean while karma handles anyone who comes for her. There are many such cases, and according to Swifties, the Olympic fumble was one of them.

Firstly, no one is required to like anyone’s music, even if Swifties wish he had been a little nicer about it. Second, the figure skater was under immense pressure from the whole world.

At only 21 years old, everyone expected him to put on an exquisite performance and take home the gold when he’d already skated three times prior. It is way too much for anyone to handle, especially someone so young.

It also feels harsh to make Tayvoodoo jokes when he already has to deal with countless headlines and newspaper front pages talking about his shocking mess-up. Malinin revealed on Instagram that his mental health was a factor in how he executed his routine.

Social media has done so much damage to people’s mental health, and we’ve seen the effects of it time and again. For his own well-being, Taylor Swift‘s fans need to lay off the jokes.
