Hurricane Rafael has decreased to category 2, after briefly intensifying to level 3 this Friday, but will cause “heavy” rains in the Yucatan Peninsula, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

The phenomenon, which has shown an erratic trajectory, has been located in the latest report 330 kilometers north-northwest of Río Lagartos and 365 kilometers north-northeast of Progreso, Yucatán, according to the National Water Commission (Conagua). ).

The cyclone, which would not make landfall, has maximum sustained winds of 175 kilometers per hour, gusts of 215 kilometers per hour and movement towards the west at 15 kilometers per hour.

Due to its circulation, the SMN has predicted “strong” rains, of 25 to 50 millimeters, in Campeche, Quintana Roo and Yucatán, the three states of the peninsula, in addition to wind gusts of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour and waves of 1.5 at 2.5 meters high in Yucatán.

“The rains caused by Rafael could generate flooding in areas of the aforementioned states, so the population, tourists and maritime navigation are urged to heed the warnings of the National Meteorological Service,” the notice warns.

In this year’s hurricane season, three cyclones have hit Mexico from the Atlantic: Hurricane Beryl and Storm Chris, which left a white toll in July, and Storm Alberto, in June, when it left six dead in Nuevo León, north from Mexico.

While the Pacific of Mexico suffered the blow of Hurricane John, which made landfall on September 23 as a category 3 and left 29 dead in the states of Guerrero, Oaxaca and Michoacán.

And on September 14, Storm Ileana made landfall in the state of Sinaloa, also in the Pacific, where it left minor damage.
