The International Labor Organization (ILO) warned Wednesday that the work gaps between men and women in Latin America and the Caribbean are “persistent” and represent “a central concern.”

The report ‘Labor Panorama 2024 of Latin America and the Caribbean’ indicates that in the second quarter of 2024, the female participation rate was 52.1%, “significantly” lower than that of men (74.3%).

The occupation rate between women (48.4%) was also lower in 22 percentage points than that of men (70.4%), and the female unemployment rate was higher (7.2%) compared to the male (5.2%).

In addition, the report said that women earn on average 20% less than men, and “they are still exposed to higher unemployment rates and lower quality jobs.”

“Although the gaps in labor participation and occupation between men and women have been reduced, advances remain slow and gender differences continue to affect the labor market,” the report says.

The Labor Economics Specialist at the ILO Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean and principal author of the report, Gerson Martínez, stressed that gender disparities in employment remain a fundamental obstacle to reaching true work equality in the region .

“Despite some advances, the gender salary gap and occupational segregation based on gender continue to limit opportunities for women,” he added.

The report argues that gender salary inequality shows “the imperative need to close the structural gaps between men and women in terms of remuneration and working conditions.”

“This problem not only affects equity in the workplace, but also has significant repercussions on the economic and social welfare of women. Therefore, it is essential to adopt concrete and specific measures to address these disparities and thus promote a more fair and inclusive work environment, ”he says.
