The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) reported that in 2025 a historical record of patents granted to Mexican people was reached, granting 972 titles, the highest level of concessions since 1995, above the 700 patents granted in 2024.
In addition, the agency specified in a statement that there were 150 patents pending payment at the end of the year, so the annual total would amount to 1,112 Mexican patents.
The IMPI linked these results to the drive for innovation and to the objectives of the federal government’s Plan México, which seeks to promote technology transfer and the increase in national patents as catalysts for economic development.
At the same time, the institute reported that, from January to December 2025, it received 21,265 applications for inventions – which include patents, utility models and industrial designs, among other figures – compared to 20,976 received in 2024.

In terms of distinctive signs, the IMPI registered an increase in the demand for procedures, after receiving 240,991 applications for trademarks, names and commercial notices in 2025, against 220,806 in 2024, an increase of 9%.
In the same period, the IMPI granted 178,072 registrations of distinctive signs, above the 169,448 titles in 2024, which represented an increase of 5%.
In the context of international events, the IMPI indicated that it granted 344 trademark registrations linked to the 2026 Soccer World Cup.
It also noted that it published 14 declarations of protection of geographical indications during 2025, with the aim of promoting and exporting Mexican products, including spheres, wines and meats.
Regarding the total number of inventions granted, the institute reported 14,828 titles granted in 2025, compared to 14,280 in 2024, an increase of 4%.
In its international projection, the IMPI cited indicators from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), which place Mexico in position 11 by volume of patents granted and also in place 11 by trademark registrations granted; In addition, on site 14 for trademark applications and on site seventh for current registered trademarks.
The institute added that, in the WIPO Global Innovation Index 2025, Mexico City entered the “top 100” of innovation groups for the first time as the second most important in Latin America.
On the anti-piracy front, the IMPI reported that, as part of the “Operation Cleaning” strategy, aimed at “combating piracy of merchandise illegally introduced and distributed in the country,” it carried out 20 operations in 11 entities.
In these actions, he secured 7.8 million pieces of apocryphal merchandise, valued at 935 million pesos.
Additionally, it reported 4,323 inspection visits and the seizure of 2,733,664 products, with an approximate value of 194,825,055 pesos.
