Mexico City, (EFE) .- The president of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Guadalupe Taddei, described as “irresponsible, unfortunate and serious” the statements of former counselors of the electoral body in which they have warned of “certain risks” in the judicial election of June 1, including fraud, and the end of the institute.

In different forums and opportunities, former presidents of the then Federal Electoral Institute (IFE), María Marván (2002-2006) and the INE, Lorenzo Córdova (2014-2023), have criticized the election of the judiciary promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Córdova has said that the election “is absurd and only has the purpose of taking over the Judiciary”, while Marván pointed out the lack of certainty in the rules of the election, the breakdown of guarantees and electoral integrity.

“It is very unfortunate, that those who are no longer, in their capacity as former counselors, think about what is happening in this process that, in addition, never had to carry out,” Taddei said at a press conference.

He recalled that the INE “faces a new process, the national election system is combined with the issue of election, for the first time in Mexico, of the Judiciary.”

The person responsible said that “they are personal opinions, but institutionally, if they were counselors and in their capacity as former councilors, or if they were former presidents or former officials of different levels, it seems to me that they never went through the institute and that they do not understand what the Institute does.”

“It seems very serious to make these statements, who have been part of this institute and that have known and have done and have carried out all the procedures that have given certainty to the electoral processes,” he added.

He also said that “political opinions covered with electoral knowledge, I think it is not what touches us. We have to guarantee citizens that the INE is about to celebrate with operational, logistics and procedural success, the first electoral process of the Judicial Power of the Federation (PJF).”

Taddei defended the work and said that the INE “will give good accounts” and recalled that “it is a structure that has 33 years of professionalism and acting (…) is a credit of the Mexican State and all Mexicans. It owns absolutely no one of the professional work of this institute.”

“The opinions of people who worked here, I’m sorry that they are so irresponsible and that they account for political positions instead of procedure, logistics and operability positions, which are supported by the agreements that this general council approves. Enough of these unfortunate statements,” Taddei closed.

The elections have been involved in different controversies, including complaints on social networks against about twenty candidates for the next judicial election, who allegedly have links with drug trafficking

The first popular election of the Judiciary in Mexico has a record of 99.7 million voters who are called to choose for the first time 881 positions of between 3,422 candidates, which include the supreme court, the new court of judicial discipline and the Electoral Court.

The campaigns began on March 30 and will end on May 28, with opposition alerts, international organizations such as the UN, current judges and civil associations of a possible interference of the Executive and organized crime in the elections.
